Both Knee AP view

An X-ray of the knee is done as a standard procedure to look for any abnormalities of the bone, any fluid buildup or problems in the soft tissues surrounding it. This is a standard projection to assess the knee joint, distal femur, proximal tibula and fibula and patella. Ideal projection to assess the tibiofemoral alignment.

There are many diseases in which a doctor might recommend getting this x-ray, either to confirm the diagnosis or to possibly figure out what is happening.

Some of those conditions are trauma to the knee, infection and osteoarthritis.

Preparation and Procedure

The patient will have to remove any jewelry or metallic objects as they might interfere with the images formed. The patient will then be asked to lay down flat on the x-ray table and the x-ray machine will be positioned above their knees. The technican takes the images and changes the position of the patient a little to get better images.

The patient might be asked to wear a gown. The technician might also take a few images in a couple different perspectives to get the best view.
