Chest PA view

A standard x-ray procedure to take an image of the front of the chest. This takes a look at the entirety of the thoracic cavity and diagnose any number of acute or chronic conditions. The posteroanterior (PA) chest view examines the lungs, bony thoracic cavity, mediastinum and great vessels.

It can also act as a very sensitive indicator of intraperitoneal gas present in the chest cavity which might itself be an indicator for a wide variety of causes.

Preparation and Procedure

The x-ray technician will ask the patient to remove all jewelry and metallic objects that might interfere with the image. The patient may need to wear a hospital gown or apron. The technician will then position the patient standing next to the x-ray machine to get a proper perspective. The staff will then x-ray the chest area and take a few images.
