Hand PA/LAT view

An X-ray procedure of the hand focusing on the joints and the bones of the fingers. Specifically, the radiocarpal and radioulnar joints, the carpals, the metacarpals and the phalanges.

This is done mainly to look for abnormalities in the bones and the soft tissue in the hand in the case of conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and fractures. The PA/LAT view of the hand is important here to see the condition of the individual finger bones along with the position they are taking in regards to each other.

Preparation and Procedure

An X-ray technician will help to prepare the patient before the image is taken. Jewelry like rings are to be removed and the hand is placed on the X-ray table. The technician will then position the hand to get a good perspective and capture it from different angles.
