Lumbar Spine AP/LAT view

Lumbar Spine ap/lat view (anteroposterior/lateral) is an x-ray image of the lower or lumbar spine. It is specifically a front-to-back and a sideways view of the lumbar spine. This reveals the condition of the patient’s lumbar spine and checks for any nearby soft tissue abnormalities.

This imaging technique is used as a diagnostic tool for acute or chronic conditions as well as to check for postoperative health.

Preparation and Procedure

Before the procedure, the medical staff will ask the patient to remove any jewelry, glasses, or metallic objects that might obstruct the x-ray images. They might also ask the patient to wear a hospital gown and change positions to better capture an image.

During the procedure, the patient may be asked to stand up if they do not have any spinal injury preventing them, or to lay down. A radiology technician will position them in order to better capture the needed area in the image. The technician will then focus the x-ray machine on the lumbar spine area taking images from different perspectives.
