Mammography

Mammography is an x-ray procedure of the breasts mainly to screen for breast cancer. Although most women will have to go through a screening mammogram to check for breast cancer, if there is any presence of lumps in the breast, the doctor will order a diagnostic mammorgram which is more extensive with a number of images from multiple angles.

If pregnant, inform your doctor; you can’t get a mammogram, but they may recommend an ultrasound.

Preparation and Procedure

Before the procedure, the patient will have to follow certain guidelines such as not wearing deoderant, powders and creams that might show up as white spots on the image.

During the procedure, the patient will either sit or stand and have to place their breasts onto the x-ray plate. They will then be compressed by the machine to form a better image. This may feel uncomfortable but it is necessary to form a clearer image. The patient may also be asked to hold their breath during the taking of each image.
