PNS (Paranasal Sinuses)

PNS is an x-ray procedure for the paranasal sinuses. The paranasal sinuses are four air filled sacs in the head which have several functions including reducing the weight of the head, air humidification and voice resonance. They are named for the facial bones in which they are located:

  • maxillary sinus
  • sphenoid sinus
  • ethmoid sinus
  • frontal sinus

A sinus x-ray (PNS) is done to see if the sinuses, which are filled with air in a healthy patient, are clear or not. If they filled with mucus or fluid, that may be a sign of infection or inflammation.

Preparation and Procedure

Any jewelry or metal objects that may interfere with the imaging have to be removed. An x-ray technician will do the imaging and may make the patient wear a hospital gown. The patient will be asked to sit or lie down on the x-ray table and the technician will position the x-ray machine in line with the patient’s head and take images in different angles to capture the best image.
