Spirometry

Spirometry is a standard test that checks for how well the patient’s lungs are functioning. The patient is made to breathe into a spirometer which records the the amount of air the patient breathes in and out along with the speed of the breath.
Doctors can use a spirometry test to diagnose pulmonary disorders, lung function diseases and asthma. It can also be used to diagnose other diseases like restrictive lung disease.
Preparation and Procedure
A few things the patient can do to prepare for a spirometry test are to not smoke for a few hours before the test, avoiding strenous excercise, wearing loose clothing and just limiting things that can affect lung capacity.
During the procedure, the doctor will use a noseclip to block the patient’s nostrils. The patient will then breathe into the spirometer for a few times to get reliable results. The doctor can then look at the results and form a diagnosis.
